    Kuestenweg english excerpt:

The Way of St. James (Camino del Norte) from Miraz to Sobrado dos Monxes

Way of St. James Day 30: 27 km, approx. 750 m ascent.

Getting up today is pretty eccentric. Canada-Sepp wakes us up with classical music. And he prepared us a great pilgrim breakfast. I can’t say no here either. And I’m in no hurry either.

Jean-Louis and I are leaving together with Mariette and Corinna. Immediately we find ourselves in a rocky heathland. The first soft light of the day is breaking in and casting long shadows in front of us. In front of us, two mighty granite blocks rise in the distance. This place reminds me of Stonehenge. It seems like a magical place. Like the gateway to another world that would be hidden behind it.

After taking the first steps together, everyone walks on their own. Some pilgrims are afraid of this stage because shortly after Cabana it reaches almost 700 meters above the sea floor. Almost everything is very gentle uphill and downhill. Today I can really enjoy everything without every drop of sweat.

The red thimble has become my new constant companion along the way. Poisonous, but I’m not going to eat it. With its pink bells it is just everywhere. As always, I put a few flowers or mushrooms in prominent places as signs for the others.

It was the right decision to stay in Miraz and now be able to enjoy this unique landscape. The stage today is officially only 26 kilometers long and I’ll make a few detours. Once you’re used to running, it’s a walk. I reach Sobrado dos Monxes early on as one of the first pilgrims. The monks’ sobrado? The buildings of the monastery are impressive from the outside.

When I knock on the door, nothing happened at first. But then I am let into an intermediate course. To show my credentials. The exam takes a long time. And only then do the gates of the monastery open for me.

Monastery on the Way of St. James: I step into an inner courtyard of calm.

And I have a lot of awe of the customs and rules that rule here. In the former horse stable (this is not meant to be derogatory, on the contrary) they have set up a fantastic bedroom for pilgrims. A rustic vault made of stone and wood. The showers are housed in the stone arches. Amazing. When the monk of the monks comes to me, he asks me probing questions about my Camino de Santiago. It’s a strange feeling. And then he takes my pilgrim pass from me. And I’m very reluctant to give it out of my hand. But it’s a monk.

Only later, when other pilgrims are already here, do I know that their pilgrimage IDs are also being “confiscated”. The church neatly registers everything. Today with modern scanners from HP.

Still, it is a very interesting opportunity to talk to the people of God. They are all quite urbane and fluent in half a dozen languages. One of the monks then shows me that there is also a separate kitchen for pilgrims. And what a! There are pots and pans waiting here to cook for thirty or more people. This thought won’t let me go either.

Little by little the other pilgrims arrive. To my horror also those who made today’s stage by taxi. I want to cook paella for Jean-Louis, Mariette and Corinna tonight. And word gets around like wildfire. After all, around 12 people would like to eat with you.

I’m looking forward to this event. I get two kilos of rice, saffron, seafood, fish, peppers, onions, etc. Corinna is enthusiastic and joins in straight away. Neither of us has ever cooked something in such large pots. Would that work? Everyone has already gathered in the kitchen while the ingredients are being cut and washed. A mountain of fresh white bread stands in the middle of the ancient wooden tables. And many brought a bottle of red wine with them.

Haiar is here again too. An older gentleman whom I met in Miraz. He too asks if he can eat with us. Of course, I say. Immediately he rummages around in his wallet and wants to give me some money. Nope, I mean.

Maybe we’ll add up afterwards. And it will definitely not be more than two euros. Please put his big bill away again. He asks again if he can really eat. What’s the point, I wonder as Haiar bursts into tears.

In the monastery: suddenly everyone is the same!

I take it and go to the door with him. Haiar was a great business consultant. Millions of millionaire. But he earned his fortune by destroying the livelihoods of others. Now he is looking for the meaning of life. He wonders how he can ever make something up.

It’s funny what different thoughts people have, what worries and motivations they have. Can you expect to find answers if you are only on the Camino for three days? Can you even find answers?

Perhaps even this question is completely wrong in itself. Because in my everyday life it was normal for me to keep asking myself questions. It was just as normal to ponder and ponder all of this. And my brain kept producing answers. But immediately the next questions came up that kept with me.

Here on the Camino de Santiago, my brain has finally just given rest. Just stopped asking big questions. And just waited for everything that came my way every day. The search for answers was superfluous after the first few days because there were no more questions.

But did I also learn something? Will I be able to take something with me from the Camino de Santiago? Any wisdom in life that would stay with me? And have I changed here?

I think so myself. It will then be decided by the others who see me again. But even today a lot has become clear to me on the Camino de Santiago.

What will the others think of you?

Nothing at all. It is just one of the many typical questions that one asks oneself in normal life – albeit completely nonsensical.

The daily etiquette, the so-called decency and the put on politeness are only a burden. If the dear brain is constantly concerned with how and in what form something can be said, or, better yet, shouldn’t say something, then it must be strenuous in the long run. What should others think of you anyway?

At least as a man, I can write extensively on this subject. Because suddenly something is gone on the Way of St. James that otherwise accompanied me all the time: You could call it the male courtship feeling. And here we are not so different from our animal relatives.

The males are constantly competing for attention. Have the most colorful plumage. Posing, barking and biting out of pure display. Approach any rival, be louder, be stronger, be more aggressive. Males make, grunt and bawl.

This behavior fits seamlessly into our very own male world. Be funnier, be more exciting, be more entertaining. Or: Be cooler, be more awesome, be even cooler. Can drink more than the rival. Have more horsepower and more apps. More sports equipment and more televisions. More parking tickets, more points. More text messages, more Facebook friends and more parties: just be cooler. To be seen, to have the latest things, to have the roof open. I could go on like this forever. And that, although I’ve been in steady hands for 20 years.

Only all of the above-mentioned, which of course certainly does NOT apply to all other men, is completely superfluous on the Camino de Santiago. Not once do I feel the need to clap loudly on a sign of the Way of St. James with the flat of my hand and scream “cool” into the world. And I never got annoyed when a car drove past me. (You have to look at this sentence again very slowly). “… when a car drove past me”, left!

It has not happened in my normal life for a long time when a car just drove past me – on the left. At least without a fight it has not been around for a long time. Even if the other had more horsepower. But then I had the higher adrenaline level. Guaranteed. And just clearing the field like that was not possible in the past.

Sure, now you can scold the speeders again (women, please skip the next page). But let’s be honest: In a completely normal heart attack, it is not the blood cells that give gas and flow quickly, but the ones that block! I’ve never heard of a front wall infarction that a fast-flowing blood cell would have caused in this world. To blame are those who just won’t go away and slow everyone else down (you don’t have to be of my opinion).

Back to normal everyday madness. Most of the time I am traveling alone in the car. The right lane is almost always free. A few courier drivers are crawling around on the middle one (often very quickly). And nothing works on the left. They just don’t go away. Large distance, as prescribed, is generally misunderstood as, “Yes, you can still drive in and slow me down”. If you catch up a little closer, that will also be misunderstood again: “Now I’m guaranteed not to let you past”.

    Right passing is bad too.

But apparently allowed in exactly the case in which the left has to brake (evidence not easy). Of course, there are also more tricks. First overtake a BMW (which is then one hundred percent irritated) and then follow the vehicle in front a little. At the man behind, the adrenaline level will skyrocket very quickly. Then briefly free up. Now he has to show what he can do. It’s lovely to let someone else chase because it always works.

It just doesn’t work when my wife is sitting next to me. Because she is guaranteed to open her mouth at the most inopportune moment of extreme tension. Basically, it is then on the wrong side. The foreseeable comment is always against me, never against the other.

The one in front of me has been compelling me for kilometers, the one behind me drives up extremely close and: I’m the bad guy! “Shall I drive honey?” As if it were different?

Yes it is. My wife opens up even closer, but she has no stress at all. Apparently, your body is not pumping out adrenaline when I, as the passenger, are already pushing through the floor pan. And the man behind? He’s now stressing me out as a passenger. My wife has not even discovered it because the mirror is more used to put on makeup. Everything calm and relaxed.

Way of St. James: No more competition – rest!

On the Camino de Santiago these impulses have now broken away due to the lack of sufficient opportunities (with a few exceptions). Time and energy are now available for real joie de vivre.

But I also noticed great relaxation among the women on the Camino de Santiago. There is none that I would have caught talking about cellulite or being overweight. No discussions about the first wrinkles, botox or shoes.

And the morning hour to make things up was also gone. No make-up and no makeup. No time consuming hairstyles. No kitchen, no household. And no playing around with poor men either.

I almost thought that I could actually understand women here on the Camino de Santiago. Because none of the women made efforts to constantly think two, three or even several corners ahead. No half-sentences, no need for interpretation, which in any case always leads to wrong results. “Didn’t you listen to me? I just told you! ”There are none of these unpleasant situations or misunderstandings here on the Camino de Santiago. Everything has become rudimentary and simple. You could also say man-friendly.

The topics are always simple and crystal clear. For example, an appropriate and always appropriate question is: “What are your toes doing?” Amazingly, the answer is never “it fits” – which my wife always has to interpret as “nothing fits”. No, there are whole conversations about the toes, the individual toes, the nails, the blisters, the plaster and so on.

Wouldn’t it be so easy in real life: “Hey, what are your knees doing?”

So it’s much more pleasant on the Camino de Santiago. At first I thought to myself: women and men in the same room? However, if everyone goes to bed immediately after dinner at 5:00 p.m. and falls asleep immediately, then gender doesn’t matter. You don’t choose your bed based on gender, but rather on hard facts. Who of the pilgrims snores the loudest? Where is he or she? Yes, women can snore loudly too! So as far away as possible and as close as possible to a window.

A kind of fixed order then arises between the pilgrims who already know each other.

Way of St. James: we stay together.

So after talking to Haiar, I continued to cook our big paella with Corinna. I feel a little like I did last supper. Even if I would like to arrive in Santiago now, it is a pity that it is slowly coming to an end.

During the night, as a guest, I can take part in the prayers and chants of the monks.

    Kuestenweg france excerpt:

Cet endroit me rappelle Stonehenge.

Incroyable.

Jean-Louis e io partiamo insieme a Mariette e Corinna. Immediatamente ci troviamo in una brughiera rocciosa.

Quasi tutto è molto dolce in salita e in discesa.

No, voglio dire.

Forse faremo i conti in seguito.

In monastero: all’improvviso tutti sono uguali!

I maschi fanno, grugniscono e urlano.

E niente funziona a sinistra.

“Devo guidare tesoro?”

E l’uomo dietro? Ora mi sta stressando come passeggero.

Niente trucco e niente trucco. Niente acconciature che richiedono tempo. Niente cucina, niente famiglia. E neanche a giocare con i poveri.

All’inizio ho pensato tra me e me: donne e uomini nella stessa stanza?

No, quiero decir.

¿Y he cambiado aquí?

“¿No me escuchaste?
